Reading it right

  1. Hold the syringe at eye level, scale facing you.
  2. Read at the front edge of the plunger seal, the end nearest the needle, not the middle or back of the rubber.
  3. Air bubble in the barrel? Draw slightly past your line, tap the barrel so the bubble rises, then push gently back to the line.
  4. To convert in your head: units ÷ 100 = mL. So 25 units is 0.25 mL.

What does U-100 mean on an insulin syringe?

U-100 describes the scale: the barrel divides 1 mL into 100 units, so every unit equals 0.01 mL. It is the standard scale on insulin syringes regardless of barrel size.

How many mL is 10 units?

On any U-100 syringe, 10 units is 0.10 mL. Divide units by 100 to get milliliters.

Why does my 1 mL syringe count by twos?

Larger barrels fit fewer lines, so 1 mL syringes typically print a mark every 2 units. The space between printed marks is one additional unit. Smaller 0.3 mL syringes go the other way, marking half units.

Where exactly do I read the level?

Read at the top edge of the plunger seal, the end nearest the needle, where the rubber meets the liquid. Not the middle of the seal and not its back edge.
