What is the difference between bacteriostatic water and sterile water?
Both are sterile. Bacteriostatic water additionally contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, a preservative that suppresses microbial growth, which is why it is the standard choice for vials drawn from multiple times over days or weeks. Plain sterile water has no preservative and suits single-use preparation only.
What size insulin syringe is best for research vials?
A 0.5 mL U-100 syringe is the common recommendation: its scale shows whole units (each 0.01 mL), which is the easiest to read accurately. 0.3 mL syringes mark half units for very small draws; 1 mL syringes often mark every 2 units, which is easier to misread.
Do lyophilized vials need to be refrigerated?
Unmixed lyophilized vials are much more stable than reconstituted ones and tolerate room temperature for shipping and short-term storage, though cool, dark storage extends their life. Once bacteriostatic water is added, refrigeration at 36-46 degrees F applies.
